Make your Food Go Further
Did you know that a third of the food we buy in the UK ends up being thrown away? 90% of us just don’t realise how much good food we throw out, yet in the UK we throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food each year. Every day we waste 1 million slices of ham and 1.3million yoghurts and yoghurt drinks.
It"s not just an issue of good food going to waste or that this costs us as consumers a significant amount of money, but that there are serious environmental implications.
Keeping your fridge, freezer and cupboard stocked with long shelf life basics means you"ll always have ingredients at hand to make the most of fresh food.
Start saving money right now. Open the fridge door and check the ‘use by’ dates on what’s inside. How often do you find that the ‘use by’ date on a packet of ham or pack of sausages has been and gone and you end up throwing it away? Meat, fish and ready meals are often the most expensive things we buy, so get into the habit of regularly checking the dates on perishable items in your fridge. Move them into the freezer if you don’t think you’ll have time to eat them or cook them for tonight’s supper. Dairy products are often forgotten at the back of the fridge. Grate odd bits of cheddar and mix with breadcrumbs for a savoury topping or stir into mashed potatoes. Use up your yoghurts in fruit smoothies or as delicious toppings on breakfast cereals. The kids are sure to love them.
