My Thoughts

Farewells and welcomes

Anti-social behaviour

Farewells and welcomes

In July I said goodbye to two Japanese families we had been looking after for several years. They were good tenants and we built up a close bond over the years, so it was sad to see them go.

Their properties are now occupied by an American and a Hungarian family. I hope they will also stay with us for a while.

Next month another of our tenants, who has had the good fortune to buy his own place, will be leaving us. The property will be occupied by two sisters from Estonia who have been living for many years in the States

Anti-social behaviour

We have recently had to deal with a case of anti-social behaviour in one of the blocks of flats we manage. One of the residents was upsetting their neighbours by playing loud music.

When I went to visit the tenant he explained he hadn’t realised his music was causing a nuisance. I’m now keeping a regular check on the situation and he now confines his noise to within acceptable hours.

I first came to London

For holidays, march 2008

My first impression of London

Very friendly people, big city with many cultures

My favourite places in London...

Hyde park

Something that Londoners forget

Tranquility

What annoys me about London

Sometimes the weather, but very rare

For relaxation I like

To take part or watch sport, cinema, meeting friends

What scare me about London

Nothing

Gareth from South Africa – February 2007

I first came to London
in August 2005. I liked what I saw and moved here in April 2006 and have been here ever since.

My first impression of London
was how diverse everything is, most of all the people. I couldn"t believe how so many people from so many different countries, races, cultures and religions could live in unity in one vibrant and exciting place.

My favourite places in London
Primrose Hill in the summer time, Camden Town on Sundays, any pub – any time, and sitting on the most comfortable couch in the world in our living room in Golders Green!

Something that Londoners forget
is that everyone comes to London because it’s such an attractive and exciting place. They should take it as a compliment that there are so many foreign visitors!

What annoys me about London
is waiting more than 10 minutes for tubes, rain and wind in the morning while walking to the underground station and the fact that the newspapers are obsessed with celebrities.

For relaxation in London
I like to sit on a blanket in the sun on Primrose Hill, chill in our backyard in Golders Green and have a "braai" (barbeque) or read a book in any park.

Jiro from Japan – February 2007

I first came to London
several years ago and have been here many times in the past, but I started LIVING in London last January.

My first impression of London
EXPENSIVE!!! I thought Tokyo was an expensive city to live in, but London is far more expensive!

My favourite places in London
Hyde Park, Harrods" Food Hall and obviously my penthouse flat in Pimlico.

Something that Londoners forget
is where to put their waste. People tend to drop or leave some waste (cans, bottles, papers, unfinished food, etc) in public areas. Since there are waste bins all around, people need to put them in the bins properly.

What annoys me about London…
Nothing so far.

For relaxation in London
I like to go window shopping on Oxford Street. No actual purchases!

Madi from the USA – February 2007

My first impression of London
was that the quaintness belies a thriving centre that pulsates with energy. People are passionate about working here.

My favourite places in London
They have the most wonderful museums here and many of them are free. The Tate Modern is the most beautifully renovated industrial building in the world. Situated on the south bank, this museum has an impressive permanent collection and always hosts a myriad of travelling exhibitions that are consistently provocative.

Something that Londoners
forget is that this city is a multicultural hub.

What annoys me about London
is the laundry machines that promise a drying function, but don’t, really. I’ve never had to iron so much!

For relaxation in London
I like to go to Hampstead Heath. I love to walk along its rough paths towards Kenwood House where I reward myself with a nice lunch.
